Well, while on holidays with the brother in law we played a small game and he has been looking at the fluff and likes the game. He seems keen to play but is more interested in the Olympus factions rather than the Aegyptus. I should know this but where can I find some rules for Olympus and I know this is a huge ask but could some one loan him an Olympus force for Cancon? He originally liked the history of the Myceneans but has also talked about the Spartans. I think the fact that he absolutely smashed me in the small game we played helped his enjoyment of the game, true to form I failed nearly all my armour saves, and was pretty woeful in my other dice rolls. I am about to register and hopefully he will register in a few days, once I can track down those Olympus rules for him to look at.

croc tales 7 has the rules - https://www.crocodilegames.com/crocTales.cfm

I suspect we can probably rustle up a Spartan or Mycenean force for him to borrow (email Nick :-))

CanCon organisers have advised they will be closing off entries for most events on Saturday 10 January, due to available space. If you haven't registered and want to, do so now!

CGS has now closed registration due to available space. As we have seven players, we may be able to have one more (if someone still wants to register).

While we didn't get to our minimum of eight players, the tournament is still going ahead. I'll be playing to make up the numbers. However this will mean the tournament will be five games rather than six.

A reminder to players, lists are now due. I won't send out the players pack until I have received all players lists.

Players pack has just been emailed to all players. Sorry for the delay. I had to wait for all lists to be submitted.

One issues I did notice in more than one list was players having more characters than is allowed for the number/combination of units in the warbands. Something to keep in mind when putting together a warband.

Tournament Results:

Champion of Ra, 1st overall - Mark
Herald of Ra, 2nd overall - Murray
Champion of Khanum, best sport - Murray
Champion of Bast, best painted - Mark
Champion of Horus, most battles won - Barry

The overall scores were based on 20% sports, 15% painting, 15% Ka level at end of tournament and 50% battle score (a combination of achievingt objectives, points killed/routing and fighting in provocation).

Some other interesting stats from the games

  • Of 20 games, only 4 provocations were fought.
  • Of eight Harbingers/Demigods, all started at Ka 2. 2 ended the tournament at Ka 3.
  • The highest points lost by a warband in a single game was 1284 points (in a 2000 point warband).
  • The lowest points lost by a warband in a single game was 52 points.
  • The highest points worth of destroyed/routing models inflicted by a single warband across the tournament (5 games) was 4968 points.
  • The highest points worth of destroyed/routing models suffered by a single warband across the tournament was 3444 points.
So what's happening next year? At this point I'm planning on running a WarGods of Olympus tournament. Sand will be replaced with grass, and sandstone with marble. Of those who are regular attendees at CanCon some already have Spartans or Myceneans, and others have Trojans or Amazons on the way. Assuming with either have the Olumpus rulebook, or at least trial rules for the Trojans and Amazons, I think we'll be easily able to run a tournament with a story set in Hellas.

Of course the Aegyptians and Wendigo are welcome to attend. The Corinthians have to hire their mercenaries from somewhere aftera all.

Thanks for running this again Erik - and thank you to everyone who turned up.

Congratulations to the other prize winners, very happy to see Barry and Murray receive these as they have been consistent performers over the years. Murray's 2nd overall was especially good to see considering some of the dice rolls he's suffered over the years!

It was a good tournament and the time limit meant that focusing on the objectives was rather important (and probably why there weren't too many provocations fought, although I'm sure avoiding - or ending up on the wrong side of - archers may also have played a role there...)

Just like to say a big thank you to Erik for taking the time to run the tournament, it is very much appreciated. I would also like to sympathize with Barry, my final opponent of the tournament, his dice were atrocious in that game and as Mark mentioned, I know that feeling when the dice seem to turn against you. In spite of that final game he still managed to get the Champion of Horus so well done to Barry. Congrats to Mark for 1st overall and best painted, I loved how each of your units was themed around cat breeds, very nice to look at, just glad I didn't have to face them this time around.

Well done those people. Though I'm sure everyone had fun.

Hopefully I will be back next year. But with a little one on the way now who quite frankly knows..

Mark - can we get pics of your army? sounds like a really good idea.

It was exactly the same warband as I had last year - two small children meant that I didn't have time to make any changes to my list (and the units aren't deliberately themed around cat breeds, although I can see how it would look like that ). I know some people took photos so hopefully someone will post pics soon!

Hope to see you again next year, and congrats on the little one.

I second thanks to Erik for running the comp and want to say thanks to all my opponents.

to me it seemed a more relaxed competition than usual, possibly because it was the first time I had run Olympians and there was a lot of 'learn by doing', usually 'learn by doing it wrong'.

Next year, probably Trojans!

Erik, are there any photos to inspire the rest of us? How about sharing the composition of the warbands used? I am in the process of getting my gaming group into Wargods now that Olympus is closer and anything that will help them understand the warband structure people use is useful .

I went with an Infamous Typhon Warband
Typhon Harbinger, Ka2, 2 x hand weapons, javelins, med armour, lg shield, amulet of Set
I put my stat increase to my Arcane, but also got to ka 3 in my final game. I went with arcane as there are a couple of powers I get that rely on Arcane. The ka 2 power I got for the tournament was Sandstorm, I do love being able to put my harbinger in your deployment zone on turn 1, most likely turn 2 because by then my assassin and all my free range characters are within striking distance to support him.
15 Typhon warriors, spear, med armour, lg shield, musician, standard
    12 Typhon warriors as above
12 Asar warriors light armour, hw, bow, std
10 Anubi warriors light armour, hw, bow
10 Nekharu warriors, dbl hw, javelins, light armour, std
    Typhon Assassin
Typhon MoW, dbl hw, med armour
Typhon hero polearm, med armour, javelins
Typhon hero dbl hw, med armour, javelins
Asar priest of Set, hw, med armour, javelins
Asar champion, dbl hw, bow, med armour
    Nekharu torturer
Anubi hero hw, javelins, med armour, lg shield
I ended up putting the 2 asar characters in the archer units and once all the characters were on the board I was out of commands
