This material is all copyright Crocodile Games 2013, I've posted it here as a convenience to our Kickstarter backers, please do not copy or share it elsewhere.

The purpose of this thread is to allow our backers a little bit of insight into how warband construction works in WarGods of Olympus, and help to plan out their pledges with some certainty that what you are getting can be used together. I’ve just compiled all of this from my working copy of the playtest rules, and I’m making other notes where needed. Please note, this is not complete or final – many Battle Honors, etc, do not have point values yet, as we’re still playtesting them - and I will likely add or change a couple before the final printing.

--Chris FitzPatrick

You first start by picking your citystate. You can choose from Sparta, Athens, Mycenae, Corinth, Troy, or the Amazons.

Here’s a quick list of Demigods & city-state compatibility, as it currently stands. As I explained on the comments section, it’s likely there will be a couple Demigods that are not permitted for each citystate – partly for their background & personaility, partly for game balance. But this list should get you started:

An Athenian warband may be lead by a Demigod of Apollo, Ares, Athena, Dionysus, Hephaestus, Hades, Hecate, Poseidon, and Zeus. An Amazon warband may be lead only by a female Demigod of Apollo, Ares, Athena, Artemis, Hades, Hecate, Poseidon, or Zeus. Male Demigods are not permitted.

A Corinthian warband may be lead by a Demigod of Apollo, Ares, Athena, Dionysus, Hephaestus, Hades, Hecate, Poseidon, and Zeus.

A Mycenaean warband may be lead by a male Demigod of Apollo, Ares, Hades, Hephaestus, and Zeus. It may be lead by a female Demigod of Artemis, though these would be rare and existing only on the fringe of Mycenaean society.

A Spartan warband may be lead by a male Demigod of Apollo, Ares, Dionysus, Hades, Poseidon, and Zeus. Female Demigods are not permitted. –Athena, Artemis, Hecate, Hephaestus

A Trojan warband may be lead by a Demigod of Apollo, Ares, Artemis, Athena, Dionysus, Hephaestus, Hades, Hecate, and Zeus. You may also take Cretan Pirates as allies, if your Demigod is Infamous (a bad guy). These allow your warband to include a Minotaur as their character option. Athens may not take Cretan Pirates as allies. We’re also including a customization section, so you can effectively make up whatever you want (with some restrictions). So, you could build something like a Sparta warband lead by a Demigod of Artemis, but you’d not be able to take all the options that are available. Such a warband they would basically be outcasts, with only the Demigod’s family warriors as her protectors.

HOPLITE SPECIAL RULES, BY CITYSTATE:

BATTLE HONORS Up to three units of Hoplites may be given a Battle Honor at additional cost, but no Battle Honor may be duplicated in the entire warband. The miniatures of a unit with a Battle Honor MUST be built or painted to match the Battle Honor’s Requirement, as described in the specific descriptions below. The Battle Honor applies to all warriors in the unit, as well as any Champion or Hero that is attached to the unit.

ATHENS

Hoplite Special Ability: Citizen Soldiers Athens is the birthplace of democracy, and the men who dwell there share in the rule of their city. Though they are often at odds on matters of policy, when threatened by an outside enemy they are quick to unite with their fellow citizens to overcome the threat. On the battlefield, the Athenians are most dangerous when the fight goes against them, for they will often pull together and fight harder in defense of their fellows, rather than fleeing. When an Athenian Hoplite unit passes a Rout Save in melee combat, all models in the unit gain an immediate free attack. This free attack is not a new activation, the models may not Wrap Around, and the unit does not remove its Command Counter if it is still unplayed.

Athenian Battle Honors:

The Companions of Theseus The founder-king of Athens had many adventures during his lifetime, fighting against the Amazons, travelling to the underworld, and slaying the original Minotaur to free Athens from the tyranny of mad King Minos. When Theseus returned to Athens after killing the Minotaur, he sailed in a ship with black sails. After his death, his ship was made into a floating shrine, and when a plank has rotted or a nail has rusted, it is replaced with an exact replica. So too are the men who fought alongside Theseus during his lifetime… they stayed together as a fighting force, called the Companions of Theseus, and as each man died or grew old, he was succeeded by a warrior of his own choosing, often his son or brother. In this way, the Companions of Theseus trace their direct lineage back to the famous band of warriors who fought alongside the first King of Athens. Their skills have been passed down through the generations; against all Amazons or Monsters, the Companions of Theseus gain a bonus of +1 to their Attack Rating in melee combat.

Requirement: All of the miniatures in a unit with the “Companions of Theseus” Battle Honor must be equipped with shields showing a ship with black sails.

Poseidon’s Faithful When Athena and Poseidon competed to become the patron god of Athens, they each gave a gift to the city at the summit of the Acropolis. Athena struck the ground with her sword, and an olive tree sprung froth from the crack in the ground, a symbol of wealth and prosperity. Poseidon struck the ground with his trident and a fountain of water sprung from the ground, yet when the Athenians tasted it, the water was bitter with salt, and undrinkable. Athena’s gift was deemed more useful and won the contest. Upon the Acropolis her olive tree still flourishes and the saltwater spring of Poseidon still flows, though now only a trickle of water emerges. A small shrine has been built upon the spring, and the priests of Poseidon have now discovered his hidden gift: those who bath in the waters of his spring are protected from enchantments, evil spirits, and the magic of foreign gods. A small band of Athenian warriors still honor Poseidon and bathe in his spring, and these warriors are known as Poseidon’s Faithful. A unit with the “Poseidon’s Faithful” Battle Honor gain a bonus of +2 on all rolls against harmful Spells and Powers that are used against them.

Requirement: All of the miniatures in a unit with the “Poseidon’s Faithful” Battle Honor must be given shields that show the trident of Poseidon. The unit must be the smallest Athenian Hoplite unit in the warband by both their Point Value and in actual models.

Chosen of Nike The Chosen of Nike are warriors of great strength and ability, the greatest athletes of their generation. Each man has won victories in contests of strength, ability, or speed at the festivals of Olympia, and has earned the honor of wearing the laurel wreath of victory. On any Turn that the Chosen of Nike are activated before their opponent in melee combat, they receive a bonus of +1 to their Attack Rating and Damage Modifier during their activation.

Requirement: All of the miniatures in a unit with the “Chosen of Nike” Battle Honor must be given shields that show the laurel wreath of victory.

CORINTH:

Hoplite Special Ability: Nothing But The Best Corinth has vast wealth, and when it sends its men to war they are equipped with the finest armor and weapons that money can buy. All weapons and armor purchased for Corinthian Hoplites, Champions, and Heroes cost 1 point less than their normal price. Thus, a Corinthian equipped with an additional Hand Weapon (0 pts), Medium Armor (3 pts) would cost only 20 points.

Corinth Battle Honors

Soldiers of Fortune: A unit with the Soldiers of Fortune Battle Honor is comprised entirely of mercenaries, unscrupulous hired swords recruited from a many different city-states. They are veteran soldiers, but their diverse backgrounds mean that they have difficulty following orders from a single commander. The Soldiers of Fortune have a bonus of +1 to both their Attack and Defend Rating, but they suffer from poor discipline: when making any Discipline Test or Save, compare the Discipline Rating of the unit and any character that is attached, and use whichever number that is lower.

Requirement: All of the miniatures in a unit with the “Soldiers of Fortune” Battle Honor must be given mercenary shields, with each warrior’s shield depicting a different emblem.

Suitors of Aphrodite (+? pts.): The Suitors of Aphrodite are a band of young Corinthian men who have pledged themselves to the Temple of Aphrodite. They seek gold and glory for their priestesses, and are generously rewarded when they return from campaign rich in plunder. Blessed by the goddess of love, all of their cares and troubles have been lifted from them, and they hasten to battle without any mortal fears. The Suitors of Aphrodite will automatically pass their first Rout Save of the game, there is no need to roll. Thereafter, the unit makes all Rout Saves at a bonus of +1.

Requirement: All of the miniatures in a unit with the “Suitors of Aphrodite” must honor the goddess by carrying shields that display a white dove, the symbol of the goddess.

The White Wings (+? pts.): The White Wings take their warriors from the wealthiest families in Corinth. They fight in their own exclusive unit, making a dashing impression in their engraved armor, gilded spears, flowing black capes and their distinctive winged shields. The songs of their heroic victories against lowborn, inferior enemies are sung at the finest symposiums in Corinth, and the men of the White Wings are idolized by the people of their City-State. Against enemy units that have a lower total Point Value, the White Wings gain a bonus of +1 on Melee Tests and Rout Tests. Against enemy units with a higher Point Value, the White Wings receive a penalty of -1 on Rout Tests. If there are multiple units involved in the melee, the Point Values of all applicable units are added to their respective sides to determine if the White Wings receive a bonus or penalty. The White Wings are always the last unit to be placed during deployment, unless the Scenario rules dictate otherwise.

Requirement: All of the miniatures in a unit with the “White Wings” Battle Honor must be given shields that show a pair of white wings.

MYCENAE

Hoplite Special Ability: Barbed Spears The massed rows of barbed spears used by the Mycenaeans are especially effective when used against vicious, primitive opponents. All of the Mycenaean Hoplite unit’s Spears are Damage Modifier 2 versus Monsters in Melee Combat. This benefit only applies when the Barbed Spears are used in massed formations; the Damage Modifier of spears used by Independent Characters remains only 1.

Sons of Mycenae (+10 pts.): These are the hardheaded warriors that come from the mountain citadel of Mycenae. They are particularly stubborn warriors, who fight even harder when a battle turns against them. After the unit passes its first Rout Save of the game, all further Melee Tests made by that unit receive a bonus of +1 for the rest of the battle. If the Rout Save is failed and the unit runs, the unit does not yet receive the bonus.

Requirement: All of the miniatures in a unit with the “Sons of Mycenae” Battle Honor must be given shields that clearly show the lion symbol of Mycenae.

Sons of Argos (+15 pts.): These warriors hail from the bustling port city of Argos, which is famous for its sturdy leather and quality bronze working. Against their armor, missile fire proves to be a mere nuisance, most slingstones and arrows bouncing off their heavy shields and failing to pierce their thick armor. All Missile Tests made against this unit are conducted at a penalty of -1. This applies to missile attacks from both the front or rear.

Requirement: All of the miniatures in a unit with the “Sons of Argos” Battle Honor must be given large, tower shields that show the boar symbol of Argos.

Sons of Tiryns (+10 pts.): These are the steadfast warriors of mighty-walled Tiryns, some of whom are descended from Heracles himself. The warriors of Tiryns must frequently fight the terrible monsters of the surrounding region, and have developed effective strategies against them. In battle, the Warriors of Tiryns receive a bonus of +1 to their Attack Rating against all Monsters. Further, their shields and armor are covered with sharp spikes that help to ward off melee attacks from Monsters; they receive a bonus of +1 to their Armor Rating against all Melee attacks from Monsters.

Requirement: All of the miniatures in a unit with the “Sons of Tiryns” Battle Honor must be given spiked shields.

SPARTA

Hoplite Special Ability: Spartan Discipline “Come back with your shield, or on it,” is the farewell that all Spartan women give to their husbands when they march off to war. A warrior who flees from battle invariably drops his shield and weapons to hasten his escape; a Spartan warrior would rather die honorably on the field of battle than retreat and face the shame of cowardice. Any time a Spartan Hoplite unit fails a Rout Save, the unit is allowed a single re-roll. If the re-roll fails, the unit must Rout – not even the power of Defy Fate can change the result.

Spartan Battle Honors

Charging Advance (+25 pts.): In past battles with the Persians and other foreign enemies, the Spartans suffered greatly due to their enemy’s dishonorable use of massed bowfire. As a result of this, their warriors have trained relentlessly, running in-step in full battle gear for a thousand yards, each warrior in perfect step with his companions, to be able to close with their enemy more quickly. It is an awe-inspiring sight, to see a complete phalanx of warriors charging across a battlefield in perfect synchronization through a rain of arrows. On the battlefield, a Phalanx with Charging Advance may declare a charge at an enemy unit that is further than their charge range but within their line-of-sight. The charge is conducted normally, and the unit must make a Discipline Save at the end of their Activation or become Disordered, each Turn that they do not make contact with the enemy. The target of the Charging Advance may not be changed; if the target changes or moves out of line-of-sight, the Phalanx must make another Discipline Save at a penalty of -1 at the start of their Activation Phase to change to a new target. If the Save is failed, the Phalanx immediately becomes disordered. When the Phalanx makes contact with their enemy, the Phalanx is maintained and all eligible models that can attack receive a charge bonus of +1 to their Attack Rating. Thereafter, the combat is conducted normally.

Requirement: All of the miniatures in the front rank of a Phalanx with the “Charging Advance” Battle Honor must be given spear arms held overhand, and in the same position, to signify that they are running in step.

Intimidation (+15 pts.): Unlike other city-states, the Spartans do not sing battle songs and issue boastful challenges before a battle begins. They march to battle in grim, confident silence, accompanied only by the haunting sound of pipes played to the beat of their footsteps. The warriors of other city-states find this effect to be most intimidating. Any unit that attempts to move into base-to-base contact with the Spartan Phalanx from the front must first pass a Discipline Test against them to do so, instead of the usual Discipline Save. Failure means that the unit’s Command Counter is removed and the unit stays stationary for the Turn.

Requirement: A unit with the “Intimidation” Battle Honor must be equipped with a Musician, and all of the miniatures in the unit must be given Spartan skirted shields to represent their formidable status.

Swings From the Right (+10 pts.): In the press of battle, a Phalanx invariably drifts to the right, as each warrior in the line unconsciously seeks safety behind the shield of the man on his right, to help to cover his own unprotected side. The Spartans have developed a tactic that exploits this, stacking their greatest strength of warriors on their own right side, allowing them to envelop their opponent’s weaker left and opposite side with overwhelming force. In battle, a unit with the Swings From the Right Battle Honor has a Push of 2” rather than the usual 1”. If their opponent Routs, the Spartan unit is allowed to reform facing up to 90-degrees to the left, rather than reforming facing forward, as normal. This represents the massed Spartan troops quickly moving to envelop their collapsing enemy’s left flank.

Requirement: For this tactic to be successful, the Spartans must concentrate overwhelming strength on their own right flank. A unit with the Swings From the Right Battle Honor must begin the game as the most expensive Hoplite unit in the Spartan warband by at least 100 points (including the cost of attached Characters, Battle Honors, etc.) and it must also be largest in actual models with at least 1 complete rank more than any other Hoplite unit in the warband. Further, it must be placed on the Spartan player’s extreme right flank, and all other Hoplite units must be placed completely to the left of this unit. Peltasts, Chariots, and individual Character models may be placed to the right of this unit of the player chooses. The right-flank placement requirement may be overruled by some Scenarios with specific deployment rules, such as Ambush, etc.

TROY

Hoplite Special Ability: Horse Tamers The Trojans are famed for their mastery of horses; they breed the finest animals for war, and because of their knowledge they are experts at facing them on the field of battle. Trojan Hoplites receive a bonus of +1 to their Attack Rating against any unit with horses, including Chariots and mounted units, and units that include horse-like creatures such as Centaurs, Pegasi, and Hippocampi. Also, the cost of a Trojan Chariot is 30 pts. rather than the usual 50 pts.

Apollonian Guard The Apollonian Guard are devotees of Apollo, who take their name from the main gate of the city of Troy, called the Apollonian Gate, and like their namesake they are masters of the bow and arrow. In addition to their normal Hoplite equipment, men of the Apollonian Guard are also armed with bows

Requirement: The front rank of miniatures in the “Apollonian Guard” Battle Honor must be given shields that show the symbol of the Apollonian Gate, and the models must be equipped with bows & quivers on their backs.

Sons of Dardanus (+40 pts.) A unit with the Sons of Dardanus Battle Honor are warriors descended from Dardanus, the hero fathered by Zeus and the nymph Electra. They are cousins to the royal house of Troy from the nearby city of Dardania, and though they are few in numbers they are loyal and steadfast in their defense of the city. The Seers have foretold that the Sons of Dardanus will survive when all others do not; whenever a Sons of Dardanus model fails an Armor Save with a natural roll of a 10, the die is re-rolled. If the subsequent roll is also a 10, the die is not rolled again.

Requirement: All of the miniatures in a unit with the “Sons of Dardanus” Battle Honor must be given shields depicting a radiant starburst, the symbol of ‘bright and shining’ Electra. If Aeneas is included in the Trojan Warband, the largest Hoplite unit in the warband must be the Sons of Dardanus.

Brotherhood of Pallas (+30 pts.) The Brotherhood of Pallas are the elite guards of the Temple of Athena in Troy, where the city’s greatest treasure is held… the Palladium. The Brotherhood of Pallas are young, chaste men who have pledged to serve the goddess Athena for ten years before they take a wife. They are steadfast in their duty, for it is said that so long as the Palladium remains safely in Troy, the city will never fall. They carry the image of the Palladium upon their shields, the goddess Athena with her arm upraised in a gesture of protection. The Brotherhood of Pallas fight with the favor of the goddess of victory, and receive a bonus of +1 to all Tests that they are required to make for the duration of the game.

Requirement: All of the miniatures in a unit with the “Brotherhood of Pallas” Battle Honor carry shields that display the image of the sacred Palladium.

AMAZONS

Warrior Special Ability: Hatred of Men All Amazons possess a deep mistrust and hatred for the men of all lands. When they go into battle against men, their hatred boils into a fury that is terrible to behold, transforming their beautiful faces into frightful masks of fury. All Amazons receive a bonus of +1 to their Attack Rating when attacking any human model of male gender. The Hatred of Men does not apply to attacks against Monsters, Undead, and the Aegyptian Children of the Gods (excepting male Asar).

Spear Sisters (25 pts.) This unit of Amazons are all half-sisters, born in the same year and the offspring of the same captive man. They are fiercely loyal to their siblings, and any who causes harm to one will suffer the wrath of all of the others. After their first Casualties are sustained in melee combat, the Spear Sisters begin to fight fanatically: when one Casualty has been suffered, the unit thereafter receives a bonus of +1 to their Rout Saves and Damage Modifier against the unit that caused the Casualty. If the unit suffers more than 25% casualties, the Spear Sisters thereafter receives a bonus of +2 to their Rout Saves and Damage Modifiers against the unit that caused the Casualties. If the unit suffers more than 50% casualties, the Spear Sisters thereafter receives a bonus of +3 to their Rout Saves and Damage Modifiers against the unit that caused the Casualties.

Requirement: All of the miniatures in a unit with the “Spear Sisters” Battle Honor must be given identical shields. Furthermore, they must be painted with a familial resemblance. For example, they could all have the same color hair and eyes, and so on.

The Horse Widows When an Amazon’s horse is killed in battle, the rider is known as a Horse Widow. Until the Horse Widow finds a new mount, she goes into battle on foot, moving with uncommon speed as the spirit of her former mount is with her. Horse Widows add +1 Move Value to their Profile.

Requirement: All of the miniatures in a unit with the “Horse Widows” Battle Honor must be given shields painted with the image of a riderless horse.

Red Hands The Red Hands are veteran warriors who have all fought and killed men in battle. Their faces are painted with the blood of their enemies, and their shields and spears are adorned with gruesome trophies, the scalps of the men that they have personally slain. The Red Hands are thirsty for more blood and trophies, to honor their spears and shields. Whenever a model in the Red Hands rolls a natural 10 on their Melee Test, the roll is considered a hit and the model is allowed to make a new Melee Test. Thus, the Red Hands model may make multiple attacks each Turn, providing that it continues to roll a natural 10 on the Melee Test.

Requirement: All of the miniatures in a unit with the “Red Hands” Battle Honor must be painted with blood-red warpaint on their faces, and their shields and spears should be decorated with gruesome trophies such as severed heads, scalps, and bloody red hand-prints.

That's it for now, feel free to post questions if something is not clear, I'll try to address them as time permits.

Hi Chris,

Can we get a list of which cities will ally with each other (as people have asked this on the kickstarter comments as well)?

Also, the playtest rules for Mycenae state that they have male demigods only, unless it is a demigod of Artemis (whose demigods can only be female). Could you please clarify this?

Also: are the swordsman units Hoplites? I noticed that the points costs in the Trojan and Corinthian teasers are much lower then the Spartan and Mycenaean costs in Croc Tales 7, and they do not include equipment.

Thanks Debs :-)

Also, thanks for clarifying the Mycenean Demigods.

Pyremius, I'm pretty sure in the Kickstarter comments that Chris stated the Swordsmen would count to the minimum 50% hoplites (they just hadn't been planned when the playtest rules were written)

Has the Demigods & city-state compatibility been written in stone yet? It sure would be nice if a Mycenaean warband could be lead by a Demigod of the Earth-Shaker.

Awesome, I'll cross my fingers and hope my Mycenaean warband can follow Poseidon into battle in the final ruleset.

I just want to put in another plug/wish for Mycenaean war bands being lead by Poseidon. See this paragraph from the Mycenaean section of Croc Tales 7:

They hold the gods of Olympus in profound respect, with Zeus and Hera rightfully held in the highest esteem. Hades the jailer is also venerated in Mycenae, both to see that their deceased ancestors are respectfully looked after in the Underworld, and for his protection from the Titans imprisoned beneath his midnight realm. Poseidon is honored there, particularly in his aspect as the Earth-Shaker, for protection against the dangerous tremors that afflict the land. There is even a shrine dedicated to Hephaestus in the rocky heights above the city, where his devotees and children craft wondrous items from Mycenaean gold and silver, and Cyclopes can sometimes be seen coming or going on some mysterious mission for their deformed master.

I recently received my Mycenaean war band, and my new demigods from the kickstarter. I LOVE the Poseidon model, they need to go together!!

The Mycenae need to follow the Earth-Shaker!!

Has the Demigods & city-state compatibility been written in stone yet? It sure would be nice if a Mycenaean warband could be lead by a Demigod of the Earth-Shaker.
It is not finalized yet.

Now that we have the Demigod powers to play with, has there been any thought put into allowing a Mycenaen warband to be lead by Poseidon? As I previously noted, the current fluff supports it.
