If a beloved has an activation counter and elects to pursue a unit which routs from melee, does it pursue 8" (as per double its movement and the normal rules) or does it get to triple its movement(as per its special charge ability rule)?

Not sure what you mean by pursue? Unlike Warhammer units don't get an action unless their Command Counter is activated.
If a Beloved's is issued a Charge Command Counter and is activated and w/in 12" of the routing unit in his charge arc, he gains triple move for Charging. If there are closer enemy units it must make a Disc. Save, or end up charging the closer ones instead. Anytime a Beloved is activated and w/in 12" of an enemy in his charge arc, he must pass a Disc. Save or charge up to triple his move. If he is issued a Charge and not within 12" of an enemy, his move is reduced to only double his move value.

There are a few exceptions to the "no action without activation" rule - the most notable being Countercharge!, and the situation Ducat is describing. Specifically, when a unit fails a Rout Test and breaks from combat, if an opposing unit in that combat has an unplayed Command Counter, they have the opportunity to pursue the fleeing unit (this does cost them their Command Counter, though). The most common ways this situation would occur are a multi-unit combat, or a pass-through by the Creeping Darkness spell.
Explanation of how this could occur aside, I do not know the answer to the question. My guess, is that since the pursuit is counted as a Charge, the Beloved would get the triple distance.

I have to dbl. check the rulebook, but i don't ever recall there being an opportunity for pursuit in the game? I understand what is being described, 2 enemy units are fighting 1 unit. The 1st enemy units breaks the 1 unit. While the 2nd enemy unit still has an unplayed Command Counter.
As far as I know that 2nd enemy unit does not have the opportunity to Charge when the opposing unit breaks. Instead it has the opportunity to activate its' counter & swing at the fleeing unit. Now if the 2nd enemy unit chooses not to reveal its' counter, later on when it is revealed it may perform the counter as normal. Ergo, if the 2nd enemy unit was a Beloved and the player held off on activating the Beloved, when the Beloved does activate if he has a Charge he gets his triple move to move into the routing unit. If he doesn't have a Charge & fails his Charging Disc. Save, then he triples his move Charging into the Routing unit. Again, I'll dbl. check my rulebook tonight, but I think this is how it goes...

This brings up the use of not always putting a HOLD command when you're in combat. Some folks (Carlos is the one who popularized this tactic in Indiana) give units in combat a charge or a Cast A Spell or some other possibly useful command in case the combat ends before that unit gets to activate. That way they are not left standing there where there used to be an enemy unit...
As to the original question about Beloveds getting their 12" charge following u on a unit- I'd say if they have a Charge command unrevealed would be the only way they could get the extra movement. But that's just me trying to 'pull an Alex.'

erm, its irrelevent what counter they have, please check out page 55 of the latest rulebook, all the relevent rules are there in the section entitled "Attacks On Retreating Models"
basically you get two options - remove your counter, hold your ground and strike with a bonus, or , remove your counter and pursue the unit which is considered SIMILAR to a charge and which then causes various things to happen. The second option is where my original question comes in...Does similar to a charge count as a charge......Is the beloved a bit thick when a unit breaks from it and so not sure which members to follow and eat so pursues slowly(well 8") or frenzied at the happening and runs them into the ground(at 12" this is pretty much guaranteed unless its Basti with an amulet as far as i can think off the top of my head)

I've played this game for years, and never knew that rule...

I concur Wade! I never knew this rule until this post forced me to reread that part of the rulebook & there it is. Basically if a unit routs and you have a unit in melee with them who has not activated their Counter, you may remove the counter and pursue them as if charging. Very Cool!
After rereading that section & the Beloved section of the rulebook I'd have to say the Beloved gets to triple his move and Charge.

I remember doing that once in one of my early games, just haven't found cause for it since and had forgotten about it till i saw this thread just now... I'd say count it as a charge.

Plus, if the routing unit is attacked from the rear (say, by a Beloved or whoever activates after they rout) they are wiped out without any Saves...
