How exactly does the free weapon option works? Is the first weapon free or is it a second weapon carried by the model? I'm planning a warband and didn't find the answer in the rulebook (perhaps I didn't look thourouly enough).

The "free weapon" in the game is known as an "improvised weapon". It costs nothing & has a 0 Damage Modifier, it's basically a punch or kick. Unlike Warhammer, all weapons must be paid for in this game for basic troops. Some character & specialized units come with weaponry.

Thx.

So if I take a free throwing club for my Khemru warriors there is no damage modifier. If I pay 2 points for the throwing club there is a damage modifier of 1.

edit: if I use the (f)throwing club option in the warband generator the damage modifier still is 1, so that isn't correct according to the conclusion stated above.

edit2: as a sling doesn't have a damage modifier it makes no difference if I took the free sling option, is this correct?

I don't think there are any free missile weapons per se. So no free sling, no throwing clubs with a zero damage modifier.

I believe that basically the free melee weapons are things that are commonly laying around and either not suited or designed for military combat. A knife is not generally long enough to be a combat weapon from what I can tell. Also things like a stick, a rock in the hand (not thrown), a chair, a vase or pot, etc. could all be considered improvised (free) weapons. It states on page 24 of the rulebook, and I am paraphrasing here, that most of the children of the gods have natural weaponry but that Asar use non-weapon type implements as weapons. So a punch, a kick, a bite, a frying pan, or a vase would all be free (improvised) weapons according to the rules.

@anstpuppet

Maybe I was confused with the options in the warband generator but your explanation about throwing weapons seems logical. So I will forget about free missile weapons and pay the points for them (it is better to know beforehand).

Hey guys, I'm not sure where the 'free weapon thing is coming from, is that on the fan-made warband generator?

In the rulebook, it says that models may fight with "improvised weapons", meaning fists, teeth, rocks, -- whatever they have on-hand, for 0 Damage Modifier. The term 'free weapon' sounds very misleading -- if that is used in the warband generator, it might be a good idea to change it to the correct term.

My fault, I didn't read the tips & tricks good enough in the warband generator. The (f) is only for specialists with default equipment. So the generator is OK if you read everything in it........

Sorry for all the hassle and confusion! But now I know a bit more about the rules and that is a good thing, in my defense; I only play once a year.

You could also have "free" javelins on a chariot (or clubs for a Khemru chariot) since a chariot comes equipped with javelins. I think that and the specialist weapons (also Horde Mummies come equipped with sword and shield so those would also be "free") are where the free designation comes from.
